Easy Alexa Setup, Excellent Light Quality — Changed My View of Amazon Basics
I admit I’ve always been a little skeptical of Amazon Basics. I used to associate the name with “cheap” or disposable, but that hasn’t been the case here. These bulbs feel solid, and the light quality is genuinely impressive. Setup was refreshingly simple. There’s no external app involved and no extra steps hidden behind “works with Alexa.” I installed the bulbs, they blinked once, I opened the Alexa app, and they were ready to use. That alone felt like a small victory—especially knowing I won’t be stuck reinstalling apps after a power outage. One thing I hadn’t realized beforehand is that the bulbs are white (opaque), not clear. Because of that, I decided they’d work better in my bedroom than in my dining room chandelier where the bulbs are visible—and they’ve been excellent there. They are noticeably brighter than the LED bulbs they replaced, despite being the same 40W equivalent, and far better than the remaining incandescent bulbs I had. The light is clean, even, and not harsh. I’m not much of a color-light person for bedroom lighting, but the color range seems extensive and responsive based on what I tested. Overall, these were a pleasant surprise, and if they hold up over time, I’d have no hesitation choosing Amazon Basics smart bulbs again.

I have a lot of respect for Amazon essentials. And as far as smart lightbulbs are concerned, these are extremely easy to install.

Gonna have to give this one 4 stars.
Lights are bright enough, are easy to install (there is a reason the joke is "how many ___ does it take to install a lightbulb", and pair really quickly with Alexa.
Functionally: Changing colors is not a pain with your voice, but the Alexa app is a bit tedious to navigate compared to other smart home software out there. Colors feel accurate, which is a little surprising considering the price tag on these.
Quality is pretty good considering the list price. I expected less heatsink, incorrect colors, and lower brightness from this price point. but That actually impressed me.
They are small candelabra bulbs, They are not going to generate a ton of heat, but make sure your base is rated for the bulb equivalent. The heatsink (which is actually the majority of the base of this bulb) is only going to do so much if you mismatch bulb to fixture ratings. I did let them run for an hour and then bare handed unscrewed them from the base immediately after turning them off with zero issues. I don't think my hands are stupid tough, but they didn't get so hot they could not be touched. Probably still best to give them time to cool off before you try to remove them.
Typical safety stuff applies here. It is a lightbulb, it works on electricity. Don't be stupid. Or else you might find yourself receiving a Darwin Award.
Why 4 stars? Glad you asked… They do the job. they actually do it well… but they are LOCKED to the Amazon Alexa Ecosystem. And as any smart home enthusiast will tell you, cross platform integration is KEY to having a smoothly running smart home. EVERYTHING else is great. and I hope that someone finds a Home Assistant workaround for these. They really are great bulbs.

I've been needing to swap out some E12 bulbs around the house, specifically for a bathroom nightlight fixture. My old bulb was on the smaller side, and when I took this one out of the box, I noticed it was significantly larger. I was actually worried I wouldn't be able to get the light cover back on because the bulb stuck out a bit, but it barely cleared. The trade-off is worth it because the bigger size provides a really good amount of lighting. The build quality is honestly better than I expected. It feels solid and has a clean finish without any weird sharp plastic edges.
Getting it paired to the Alexa app was a little tricky at first, but once it connected, the rest was straightforward. Since I am already deep in the Alexa ecosystem, controlling it is super simple. I really like the versatility of being able to change the color and brightness to match whatever mood I am in or time of day it is. It is a solid smart bulb, though I do hope they eventually release a clear Edison design version of this at some point.

Works as advertised. I did have to (following included instructions) reset the bulb as it wouldn't be found by my Alexa app the first time. After resetting, it was found promptly. Nice rich colors. As bright as would expected for this size bulb. The E12 bases can be limiting so I purchased E12 to E26 adapters so I can use these bulbs in any regular US socket or the smaller candelabra base.
Overall, a good value for the money.

I put this in my son’s lamp in his room and connected it to our Amazon Echo Pop. We can ask Alexa to change the color and can control it in the Alexa app. It’s super fun for adults and kids alike to play with! My son left it on a dim green for bed and uses it like a nightlight. Then during the day, it’s just a normal lightbulb. Super cool.
